‘HE GIVES 110% to customer service,’ and for that, Aijaz “AJ” Merchant, has been nominated for Customer Service Employee of the Year.
Mr Merchant was nominated by Caroline Hathaway a regular customer of the Iceland at the Quennevais Parade, where AJ works. Mrs Hathaway said: ‘He doesn't just pass the purchased items over the scanner and take the money: he gives a happy greeting to each customer, he tells them of offers that he thinks they may have missed, he makes you feel you are a valued customer and he is so happy in his brief chat that one leaves the store in a much better mood than before.
‘He is a credit to his employers, because I'm sure he makes the business a great place to work with his happy attitude, and I think all customers who are pleased to have been served by him would always wish to be served by him in future.’
Mrs Hathaway said that Mr Merchant is ‘a breath of fresh air’ and an ‘excellent employee’ who is ‘always helpful,’ recalling a time when she found that the lid on one of her items was broken, and Mr Merchant told her there was a new shipment of them coming in soon and promised to keep one aside for her, remembering her when she came into the shop to collect it a few days later. This act of kindness is only one of ‘countless occasions’ where Mr Merchant has gone one step further to keep his customers happy.
‘It’s his friendly banter and his smile. He does stand out,’ said Mrs Hathaway.
‘He just makes shopping at the supermarket a pleasure. Whenever I need to go into Iceland I look forward to it and hope he’s there.
‘He offers terrific service I think everyone should emulate. He’s a role model to everybody.’
